While traveling in Tokyo, Japan, I wanted to finish my day’s schedule and enjoy some great food and a cold draft beer at a nice restaurant. And I found a famous restaurant and bar in the heart of Roppongi.

わらやき屋 六本木, Warayakiya is a popular restaurant where you can enjoy the traditional ‘warayaki’ cuisine of Kochi Prefecture, Japan. You can enjoy fresh fish and meat grilled over straw fire while watching the firework performance indoors (straw grilled fish & meat)

The Atmosphere of the Restaurant

The restaurant is already bustling with excitement, filled with workers from nearby companies and foreign tourists.

I was lucky enough to get in without having to wait. It was a nice atmosphere with a wooden interior reminiscent of a traditional Japanese house and traditional Japanese music playing.

There are various types of seats available, including counter seats where you can see the chef’s straw fire performance right in front of the open Kitchen, traditional Japanese heated table seats (掘りごたつ), sofa seats, etc.

I was guided to a counter seat, where I ordered the restaurant’s signature (bonito) straw-grilled salt tataki (名物/かつをのわらやき塩たたき), along with a cold draft beer to pair with it. It’s a popular dish that you absolutely must try.

Warayakiya Menu and Food Prices (Straw Grilled Fish & Meat)

In addition to Lightly grilled of bonito, there are main dishes featuring a variety of fish and meats cooked in warayaki style, including succulent, top-quality Kuroge Wagyu, thick beef tongue simply marinated in salt sauce, Shimanto region brand pork aged in salt koji, and soft and fluffy eel.

A basic side dish consisting of vegetables was provided.

Straw Fire Show & Grilled Bonito

After ordering the food, a short while later the chef prepares Straw in the stove.

A special warayaki grill is used, where straw is added and set on fire to sear large cuts of tuna whole. The intense, high flames of the burning straw quickly sear the surface of the bonito

Thick slices of seared bonito are served on a wooden board. Just a touch of salt, paired with green onions, sliced onions, garlic, ginger, and a dab of wasabi.
It’s absolutely delicious, with a smoky aroma on the outside and a tender, juicy inside

The two of us each ordered a plate, and we finished it in no time

Another side dish menu

There were so many tempting side dishes we wanted to try. We’d been out since morning and were starving. So we ordered some more food.

‘Grilled Saba(mackerl) Shshi’

Bite-sized mackerel sushi served with ginger This dish is made by lightly grilling mackerel sushi to enhance its flavor. It is fresh and has a smoky aroma that stimulates your appetite.

‘Deep-fired kibinago fishes’

whole fried silver-colored fish called kibinago (銀条鱼) Crispy and savory, this well-fried fish goes perfectly with just a squeeze of lemon and it goes very well with beer

‘Fried noodles with chives’

Stir-fried noodles topped with a generous amount of chives, stir-fried at high temperature. Simple but addictive, it’s great as a meal or as a snack.
